| UNS S31603 316l Stainless Steel Properties UNS S31603 316l Stainless Steel is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel designed to possess properties that make it highly resistant to corrosive degradation while achieving an ease of weldability. The industry considers stainless 316L tubing to provide superior corrosion resistance over 304L stainless steel tubing. The stainless 316L tubing grade varies from the straight grade 316 primarily due to a lower carbon content. By possessing less carbon, 316L stainless steel tubing is more immune from sensitization, grain boundary carbide precipitation, and intergranular corrosion. Lower carbon levels allow for a greater ease of machining as well. The molybdenum improves corrosion resistance along with resistance to chloride pitting. This alloy is not hardenable by heat treatment, but the hardness and tensile strength improve with cold working. stainless 316L tubing is not magnetic in the annealed condition, but cold working or welding can sometimes result in slight levels of magnetism. Due to these factors, 316L stainless steel tubing can be found across a wide array of applications including, but not limited to, the following: oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical processing, food and beverage processing, marine, medical, petroleum, refining, pharmaceutical processing, power generation, nuclear, pulp and paper, textiles, and water treatment.
